Sire - Jaggers Journey. Gorgeous!

Split-Ridge Red Zeppelin
(Jagger's Journey x Summer Morning Glow)

Born March 2013

Spring 2014 - starting to shed out

The below video was shot on 6/4/14.  You will see Red Zeppelin's progress with some of his ground exercises as follows:
  • Light lunging and changing direction, including over the tarp. This is his 3rd day lunging and already he is refining to more subtle cues.  (for those who are gasping over lunging a yearling - the vet recommended several minutes of lunging each day to help keep swelling from castration down, it's ok, we are not damaging him in any way!)
  • Yielding hindquarters stage 1 & 2.
  • Yielding forequarters - still needs improvement on one side stepping across in front, but is doing great and does not try to move forward.
  • Backing (1. tapping air with stick; 2. wiggle rope; 3; wiggle, wave & walk. 4. marching)
  • Being asked to step onto the tarp
  • String & rope thrown all over him, spanking the ground with the string
  • Trailer loading & unloading (both turning and leading off and being backed off)

Just born!
Day 1 - part of the imprinting process having noisy objects rubbed all over him.
All legs are flexed & handled. Hooves are smacked on - this is his first farrier experience.
Trimmers are rubbed all over his entire body to desensitize him to the noise & vibration.
A feed bag stays in the stall with him so he can step on it, play with it and lay on it. He won't be afraid of crinkly objects after this!
Noisiest bag I could find is rubbed all over him numerous times. He now thinks the bag is a toy.
Trenton has to get in his snuggle time!
Practicing putting halter on & taking it off.
Hello kitty!
Ears are handled extensively.
Day 3 - exploring the barn and meeting the tarp. He has the crinkly bag stuck on one foot following him around and he's unconcerned.
If mom can stand on the tarp, I can too!

Day 3 - "Joey" comes out of his stall & explores the barn.  We threw a couple of tarps down on the ground - watch as he goes from unsure about these scary objects to confidently walking on them!  (and keep scrolling down - there are more pictures AND A TRAINING VIDEO below!)
Standing on a tarp, with a small boy, playing with a clangy bucket - pretty sure that means I've conquered the world and in only 3 days!
learning to yeild the hindquarters
learning to yield the hindquarters the other way
learning to back up from pressure - very light, caught onto to this one immediately!
day 3 - learning to lead beside
day 3 - carrying my first saddle blanket!
Jingly surcingle
leading beside carrying the jingly surcingle
All wrapped up in strings & lead rope
standing calmly while rope is slung around front leg
Slinging rope around hind legs

I walk off camera a few times in this one - I didn't have a helper to video this, so set the camera up on the tripod. :)

Here is Red Zeppelin (nicknamed "Joey") at 2 weeks old practicing a few exercises.  You will see how he is doing at leading, stepping over a log, yielding his hindquarters from touch and driving pressure (rope & hand), yielding forequarters from touch and driving pressure, backing up from both halter pressure and touching his chest.  Also having rope thrown around him and picking up feet.  He's doing pretty good for such a little guy!  What a cutie!

Joey's first trip out with mom being ridden!
Picture
Joey's first "trail ride" - here he is coming down his very first hill - I think he was surprised to learn the world isn't flat!
Picture
June 2013 - Joey getting his first trim and a full body trim at that! He was completely unconcerned with the clippers - stood there like a good boy!
Picture
Being trimmed for first time, cord wrapped around the feet, small boy wearing flip flops holding the foal . . . recipe for disaster? Not with an imprinted Rocky foal - this was an uneventful breeze!

Joey loves to play with a big rattley tarp! Between pawing, biting & stepping on this one, he's almost got it ripped in two! :)

Below video shot on 8/03/13.  Just a short video of Joey having the tarp thrown on him.
